Manilla Branch of CWA attend State Conference at Tweed Heads. President Joy Highlands and Treasurer Doris Budden were the Branch delegates to Conference and travelled to Tweed Heads on Saturday 3rd May. The venue was the Twin Towns Resort, which was excellent as the conference centre and accommodation were all under the one roof. Manilla Branch Secretary Michelle Eggins, who is also the Namoi Group President and Representative to Executive drove up on Friday for Pre-Conference meetings and after a long week all our ladies travelled home by coach on Saturday. Members were able to listen to Guest Speakers on various topics. The Guest Speaker during the opening of Conference on Monday was Ms Ronni Khan of OzHarvest. She developed this wonderful scheme for the less fortunate in our major cities of re-using left over food. There were certainly many highlights of Conference; and one certainly was hearing retired School teacher Ms Carolyn Hauff speak about 'Schooling Today's Generation - What a Challenge'. Do you know we now have 'generation Y and Z' children to be educated with the many new problems that our modern methods and lives have brought upon them. Resolutions were discussed and debated with enthusiasm, with letters to be written on various matters of concern to our State and Federal Members of Government - some are the 'single desk' wheat issue, privatisation of our power industry, grain haulage on our roads. $25,000 will be donated from CWA of NSW through our Associated Country Women of the World (ACWW) to the people of Burma. Michelle is very proud of her latest achievement in this wonderful volunteer organisation called the Country Women's Association of NSW; she is now one of our four State Vice Presidents; but sadly was unable this year to claim a prize for her pineapple jam.

The Great Australian Bite. Manilla Branch of the Country Women's Association this year will be hosting an afternoon to support and bring more awareness of Diabetes to Manilla. Wednesday 14th May from 2pm at the CWA rooms; please come with a friend and enjoy a wonderful afternoon tea, 'CWA style' with a Guest Speaker to tell us more of this ever increasing illness. Diabetes effects the pancreas - either not making any insulin, or the insulin it does make is not enough and can't work properly. There are two types of Diabetes - Type 1 and Type 2. Do you know the symptoms of Diabetes? You may have a member of the family or friend that has this illness or similar symptoms; and it is something that we can learn more about. For catering purposes a phone call to 6785 2508 would be greatly appreciated. Thank you and we hope you are able to attend, Michelle Eggins, Manilla CWA Secretary
